A name synonymous with South Australian road transport, Dyer’s Transport, has been sold across the border to the Pickering Transport Group.
The husband and wife team of Wayne and Ros Dyer are finalising the deal to retire from the Renmark-based business.
Dyer’s Transport has roots in the region stretching back to 1924. The business was started by Wayne’s great-grandfather carting timber.
With about 30 to 40 prime movers, the company now delivers wine grapes, other fresh produce and general goods to and from the Riverland region.
Ros says the timing was right to sell-out. One of two Dyer brothers was looking to move on and the couple, now in their 50s, have been separated while Ros runs the Adelaide depot.
“The main aim of the game is for me to go home,” she tells ATN.
Swan Hill-based Pickering Transport is expected to run Dyer’s as a division within the group.
The refrigerated and general freight carrier, run by General Manager Roger Pickering, includes Mildura-based Kelly’s and Young Trucking and the ex-Lake Boga Transport operation in Swan Hill.
A Dyer’s sub-contractor, Steve Malloy, pays tribute to the family, saying they have made a great contribution to South Australian transport.
“They’ve always treated everyone with the utmost respect, treated everyone with dignity, they’re just exceptional operators,” he says.
Ros says an earthmoving company also owned by the family is not part of the sale.
