Move to see an improvement to truck turnaround times and remove congestion
Container port and supply chain operator DP World’s West Swanson Melbourne terminal gets back three out of five truck grids today as work progresses at the Bentley Chemplax site.
The company has been struggling to deal with landside congestion since starting work on its new capacity project in Melbourne, its largest investment project, in September last year.
The development is expected to help the company handle an additional 100,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) or bigger containers each year.
The terminal was required to forgo up to 350 terminal ground slots and five truck grids during the initial phase of construction.
Congestion is expected to ease with the opening of the three truck grids, with the remaining two opening after the first week of March.
The terminal ground slots will begin reopening in sections starting next week up to the mid-March – the estimated date of completion of Phase One.
The next phase includes the closure of Coode Road (subject to Port of Melbourne approval) which will be delivered in phases.
Upon successful completion of the project, DP World Australia will be able to offer Melbourne’s first integrated port-rail terminal, with an on-dock rail service.
The project aims to reduce costs for exporters and increase competitive advantage for shipping lines through Melbourne.
