Double demerits in NSW over Australia Day long weekend

Speeding and seatbelt offences will attract double demerits from January 23 to 26.

Drivers in New South Wales who commit speeding or seatbelt offences over the Australia Day long weekend will be slugged with double demerit points.

Double demerits will be in place from January 23 to January 26 as part of NSW Police’s Australia Day enforcement campaign, Operation Safe Return.

“Double demerits will be in force throughout the period for speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences,” NSW Police says.

Acting assistant commissioner Stuart Smith says police expect to also carry out more than 200,000 breath tests over the long weekend.

“Police will be doing our part and what we need is the travelling public to work with us and make a safe return this weekend,” Smith says.

He adds that officers will target what is known as the ‘fatal five’: speeding, drink/drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, distracted driving, and fatigue.

“It’s the high-visibility formula that we have used for several years and it has assisted in two years of record low annual road tolls in 2013 and 2014,” Smith says.
