Drivers in New South Wales who breach road rules will be slapped with double demerit points this week as Anzac Day approaches.
Police will be out in full force on the roads from Wednesday, April 24 to Sunday, April 28 as motorists look to combine the public holiday with the weekend.
Double demerits will be applied to speeding and seatbelt offences, NSW Transport Centre for Road Safety General Manager Marg Prendergast says.
She has reminded drivers to take plenty of rest and look out for early warning signs of fatigue.
“Don’t set out if you are already tired and avoid driving when you would normally be sleeping,” Prendergast says.
She says it is also important for motorists to be aware of breakdowns when travelling on major roads.
“If you see a breakdown, slow down. Not all breakdowns happen in a breakdown lane, however we see people using breakdown lanes to make social mobile phone calls, resting or attending to children,” Prendergast says.
“These are high speed environments which should only be used in an emergency.”
While the road toll in NSW is lower than at the same time last year, Prendergast says road users “must remain vigilant” every time they get behind the wheel.
