Digital driver licences arrive in Victoria

Check out how Victorian fleet owners and truck drivers can access their digital driver licences

The Victorian government has announced that the state’s drivers now have the ability to carry their driver licence on their phone amid the rollout of the state’s biggest digital card to date.

More than 4.5 million Victorian fully licenced drivers, motorcyclists or heavy vehicle operators are now eligible to download digital driver licences, with eligible Victorians able to access the licence after setting up their profile via the myVicRoads and Service Victoria apps.

“Our digital driver licences will make it easier for Victorians when they go about their day-to-day lives – whether that’s driving around, renting a car, collecting a parcel or visiting a licenced venue,” Victorian roads and road safety Melissa Horne says.

The rollout follows consultation across organisations that rely on photo identification including bars, restaurants, supermarkets, retailers, Victoria Police and Australia Post.

The licences follow a successful trial last year where more than 15,000 Victorians in Ballarat accessed their digital licences via the required apps.

In response to privacy security fears, the Victorian government says the licences have undergone “rigorous privacy and security testing” and include features like a dynamic hologram and a timed QR code to allow businesses and authorities to scan to verify authenticity and prevent fraudulent use.

Changes to licence conditions or personal information can be updated in real-time, with learners and probationary licence holders able to access their digital licence by next year.

“Victorians have been asking us for a Digital Driver Licence – and now millions of Victorians can access them on their phones alongside other government-issued cards like a Working with Children Check, seniors card or fishing licence,” Victorian government services minister Gabrielle Williams says.
