A Peugeot 308 hatchback, powered by the company’s latest turbo-diesel engine, has set two world records for fuel economy in a marathon 14,580 kilometre trip around Australia.
John and Helen Taylor made the marathon trek with a load of luggage in a standard production model, proving the low CO2 emissions possible with new diesel engines.
Recording equipment detected just 90 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometres, compared to the national average of 285 grams per kilometre travelled.
As well as recording sub-average emissions during the trip the Taylors also set fuel economy records, including a potential Guinness World Record, although this is subject to confirmation.
Their performance also eclipsed that of competitors in the 2007 World Solar Challenge, run between Darwin and Adelaide, drawing praise from organisers for their efforts in a production vehicle.
