The long awaited arrival of the new range of DD engines from Detroit Diesel is officially over

The long awaited arrival of the new range of DD engines from Detroit Diesel is officially over, with the latest engines showcased to the media in Sydney.

Initially there will only be two versions, the DD13 and DD15. However, MTU Detroit Diesel Australia Managing Director Doug Seneshen says there will be a DD16 joining the range in the future.

“With these innovative heavy duty engines offering unparalleled torque response and power, increased fuel economy, low cost in ownership, and a smoother, cleaner ride, they are Detroit Diesel’s most technologically advanced engines yet,” Seneshen says.

Among the technical advances on the DD15 are turbo compounding, which creates up to 50 extra horsepower through use of a second, geared turbine.

There is an amplified common rail fuel system to improve fuel consumption and an advanced cooling system to reduce fan on-time, which can draw as much as 40 horsepower from the engine.

Macklan says the engines have completed a total of 1.4 million kilometres of testing in Australia in DD13 and DD15 form in a mix of Freightliner and Western Star prime movers.

Despite no Argosy being used in the tests, Seneshen says the engines will be available in the cab-over version. The testing was for engine durability rather than being a truck test and depended on customers willing to trial the new engines.

See the November edition of ATN Magazine for more information on the new DD13 and DD15 engines.
