Daimler Truck has announced it will begin to focus on the international defence sector due to the rising demand for the production and sales of military commercial vehicles for logistics applications.

Within Daimler Truck, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks is responsible for the defence, firefighting, disaster relief and civil protection segments, and conducts its own research and development, implements individual customer requests and produces high volumes for large orders.

“Step by step we are expanding our business in the defence sector,” Head of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks Franziska Cusumano says.

“We have developed a clear strategy for this following the motto ‘grow and invest’.

“The contracts concluded and the vehicles handed over in large numbers last year underline that our logistics solutions are tailored to the needs of different customers and their various deployment scenarios.”

Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks already has a strong presence in Australia and recently headlined its showcase at the Sydney AFAC Fire and Emergency Services Show in Sydney with its Unimog U5023.

The U5023 is a staple in the fleets of Forest Fire Management Victoria and the NSW State Emergency Service.

The Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks suite of fleet options includes the off-road Unimog and Zetros, as well as the Atego, Actros and Arocs truck models and heavy-duty tractor units.

Four vehicles for defence deployment will be showcased at the IDEX Fair in Abu Dhabi from February 17 to February 21 – two trucks from the Zetros off-road model series, an Arocs heavy-duty tractor unit and the variable chassis for protected bodies (FGA).

Daimler Truck recently revealed its overall sales number for 2024, where it sold a worldwide total of 460,409 units across Daimler Truck Group’s major demographic.

125,234 of those sales came in Asia, however the overall number of unit sales was a 12 per cent drop from the 526,053 sales made in 2023.
