Decarbonisation MoU signed between world-leading ports

Shanghai Port and the Port of Hamburg are among a list of movers and shakers to sign a decarbonisation MoU between the shipping destinations

China’s Shanghai Port and Germany’s Port of Hamburg have signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the inception of a green shipping corridor between the two ports.

The MoU was signed among the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), COSCO Shipping Lines and Shanghai International Port Group, all of whom will now work with technology and equipment manufacturers, energy suppliers, cargo owners, terminals and shipping companies to accelerate shipping’s decarbonisation process.

The signing of an MoU to promote green transformation and sustainable development of the shipping industry is far from a foreign concept. The Australia-Singapore Low-Emissions Technologies (ASLET) initiative was recently undertaken by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and Australia’s CSIRO in a similar move.

Shanghai Port also reached green shipping agreements with American ports the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach prior to this latest MoU being signed.

The Port of Hamburg is the largest seaport in Germany and third largest in Europe. It is also Europe’s largest rail port.

HPA Board Member Lennart Kinau says partnerships like these are important for advancing critical decarbonisation technology in the maritime sector.

“This partnership strengthens our position at the forefront of digital transformation, allowing us both to enhance efficiency and governance in port management as well as to achieve new levels of sustainability along critical trade routes like the East-West corridor,” Kinau says.
