Dearth of skilled candidates in logistics sector: report

FMCG experience and forklift licence a key attraction for employers

Roles such as supply chain and inventory managers and controllers, production managers, store persons and warehouse operators will be remain in demand this year, a recent study indicates.

Hays’s quarterly report on the jobs trend between January and March this year suggests more and more organisations are looking for candidates with strong skills background and those with tertiary qualifications.

“The transportation of goods around the country in the lead-up to Christmas ensured the last quarter of 2016 was very active,” the report states.

“Following this, we expect to see good levels of vacancy activity this quarter, with both temporary and permanent roles on offer.

“The manufacturing sector has improved, with operational logistics roles available.

“These include warehouse and transport roles as opposed to supply chain roles.

“With organisations continuing to outsource logistics, vacancy activity in 3PL companies will be strong.”

Although Australia has always had a need for supply chain managers to fill roles created due to the import sector, the growth in e-commerce is leading to demand for candidates with fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) experience.

Many companies are also attempting to streamline warehouse supervisor and inventory roles, driving up the need for inventory controllers with operational experiences and licences to handle tools and machines.

Additionally, there is also an increased need for supply chain coordinators, production managers, store persons and warehouse managers in the FMCG sector, particularly those with forklift licences.

The report also notes that that bigger logistics companies are keen on keeping salaries steady, leveraging “their brand and opportunity to join the team”.

Number of skilled candidates is also lower in eastern states, it states.
