Deadline for submissions to RSRT review closes next week

Stakeholders have until January 15 to make a submission to a review of the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal

Those interested in having a say on the future of the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal (RSRT) have just over one week to make their views known.

The deadline for submissions to the review of the RSRT is January 15.

Announced in November last year, the review aims to determine if the tribunal is an effective means of addressing safety in the road transport industry.

It will also examine if the RSRT overlaps with existing regulations, what its impact on safety has been to date and if there are alternative approaches to addressing safety concerns in the industry.

Consultant Rex Deighton-Smith is leading the review, which is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2014.

When he announced the review, Employment Minister Eric Abetz argued there were a number of existing measures in place to deal with safety in the industry.

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) criticised the Federal Government for initiating a review. It believes the Government intends to shut it down.

The RSRT last month issued its first road safety remuneration order that will run from May 1 this year until April 30, 2018.

It mandates 30-day payment terms for owner-drivers and imposes requirements on the transport supply chain covering contracts, safe driving plans, training and drug and alcohol policies.

Established in 2012, the tribunal has the authority to issue binding orders covering remuneration and remuneration-related conditions for owner-drivers and employee drivers.

It also acts as a dispute resolution body and was created in response to findings that linked low pay to poor safety in the trucking industry.
