DB Schenker makes Aus/NZ SAF power move

DB Schenker is now offering fully decarbonised flights for its shipments travelling out of Australia and New Zealand

Global logistics giant DB Schenker has officially joined Cathay’s Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Programme in the hopes of advancing sustainability in the logistics industry by partnering the reduce emissions in cargo shipments.

It means DB Schenker shipments from Australia and New Zealand can now be decarbonised through the programme.

Cathay’s Corporate SAF Programme was established in 2022 and enables members to purchase SAF on Cathay Pacific and Cathay Cargo flights.

DB Schenker’s commitment to buy 878 metric tonnes of SAF has seen it become one of the biggest contributors to the scheme over its existence.

Air Freight Director DB Schenker Australia & New Zealand Cluster Daniel Andersen says reducing greenhouse gases in the logistics sector requires across the board collaboration.

“This major partnership with Cathay on SAF opens the door to more sustainability collaboration in the region,” Andersen says.

“SAF is available throughout Australia and New Zealand on DB Schenker air freight for customers looking to elevate their contributions to a more sustainable aviation industry.”

DB Schenker’s commitment to Cathay’s SAF programme is the latest in a string of sustainable undertakings by the international logistics company.

In 2020 it became the first company in the logistics industry to cover a commercial full charter round trip flight with SAF.

Then, as of spring 2021, all direct emissions of a weekly charter rotation between Frankfurt and Shanghai onboard Lufthansa Cargo were avoided by fully covering fuel consumption with SAF.

Cathay Director of Cargo Tom Owen says the DB Schenker’s large commitment to the program could pave the way for further future support from the industry.

“We are delighted to welcome DB Schenker as the newest member of the Cathay Corporate SAF Programme – and one of the biggest contributors to date,” Owen says.

“It is great to have this level of support from such an important player in the air cargo industry to work with us in decarbonising aviation.

“By replacing conventional jet fuel with sustainable aviation fuel, DB Schenker’s commiutment is the equivalent of saving more than 2600 tonnes in CO2 emissions.

“This powerfully conveys the message that there is real and growing demand for SAF, and this partnership is a testament to the collaborative ethos of Greener Together, as we move one step closer to the goal of a more sustainable air cargo industry.”

DB Schenker operates land, air and ocean transportation services and currently employs more than 70,000 people at over 1850 locations in over 130 countries.

Its SAF program is available globally for all flights on all airlines and has already attracted a wide range of customers including Lenovo and Nokia.
