DAF expands Aussie range

DAF Trucks to unleash new models to compete with Volvo and Mercedes-Benz in the heavy vehicle sector

By Gary Worrall | June 28, 2010

DAF Trucks is looking to join big names like Volvo and Mercedes-Benz at the top of the heavy vehicle sales tree, adding extra models to compete in new sectors of the market.

Sydney DAF dealer Gilbert and Roach has developed a locally engineered 10×4 rigid to tackle established brands like Mack head-on, offering European drive trains in what has previously been the domain of predominantly American trucks.

The DAF rigid, complete with an extended wheelbase and maximum legal overhang and a lift up pusher axle, complies with the NSW maximum kerb-to-kerb turning circle of 25 metres.

The extra axle also allows a 32-tonne GVM in NSW, whiles the truck’s GCM is a reasonable 58 tonnes.

The same running gear, fitted to 8×4 chassis in Western Australia, is able to be rated to a GCM of 70 tonnes.

While the 10×4 represents a step forward using local expertise, even bigger news is the European XF heavy duty prime mover will make its way to Australia.

Although PACCAR officials remain tight lipped, it is an open secret DAF personnel have lobbied long and hard for the heavy-hitting Euro to be unleashed onto the Australian market.

While a final configuration for an Australian XF range is yet to be confirmed, given the popularity of 6×2 drivelines in Europe it appears the development of a 6×4 drive would be needed to crack the lucrative line-haul market in Australia.

While the CF range is growing in popularity, one factor in DAF’s favour is the ability to fit not just PACCAR engines but also Cummins engines and Road Ranger manual transmissions to meet customer wishes.

With all current XF production already allocated, it is understood the Australian version will not arrive before June 2011, however it may arrive as the first ADR 80/04 certified truck following recent news the PACCAR MX engines have received US Environmental Protection Agency 2010 approval.
