A $30 million bridge project is set to improve safety and congestion on Sturt Highway, supporting commuters, local businesses and freight movements through the city.
With more than 20,000 vehicles using the Marshalls Creek section of the highway daily, the existing bridge in the area will be replaced with a longer, wider structure, expanding from two lanes to four.
The highway also forms part of the critical freight corridor linking Sydney via the Hume Highway to Mildura in Victoria and Adelaide in South Australia, making this upgrade vital for both local and interstate traffic.
The construction contract for the replacement bridge has been awarded to Huon Contractors Pty Ltd, with major works scheduled to begin in August, weather permitting.
In the meantime, early works will continue in the coming weeks, including relocating electrical overhead power poles and installing new street lighting.
“To see these much-needed improvements progress to the construction stage is exciting news for the local community and anyone who travels to the area,” member for Wagga Wagga Joe McGirr says.
“In addition to providing increased capacity on the bridge, the project will deliver a three-metre-wide shared path on the southern side and a 1.8-metre-wide footpath on the northern side to greatly improve access for pedestrians and cyclists.
“This investment by the Government demonstrates a commitment to making Wagga Wagga an even better place to live, work and visit.”
Further information will be provided to the community before major construction begins, with motorists advised to drive to conditions and follow all signage and directions from traffic controllers.
“The Minns Labor Government is delivering critical infrastructure that regional communities need and deserve. More than 20,000 cars travel this section of road every day making this an important project to improve efficiency and safety at this known pinch point,” roads and regional transport minister Jenny Aitchison says.
“This project will improve traffic flow on the Sturt Highway by replacing the existing two-lane crossing, doubling the number of lanes available and removing the need to merge.
“I was pleased to work closely with the local member Dr Joe McGirr on securing this major project for his community. The Minns Government is committed to investing in regional NSW, creating jobs and improving connectivity for families and businesses across the state.”
