Queensland drivers and freight operators making use of the Bruce Highway north of Brisbane may have something to cheer about soon.
The state’s Department of Transport and Main Roads has released a preferred solution to upgrade the notorious 18-kilometre bottleneck between Anzac Avenue, North Lakes and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road, Caboolture.
The plan includes adding additional northbound and southbound lanes between Anzac Avenue and Uhlmann Road in the existing median to increase capacity from three to four lanes in each direction.
It also includes multi-lane, one-way collector-distributor roads on both sides of the highway between Uhlmann Road and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road.
Collector-distributor roads were identified as the most viable solution between Uhlmann Road and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road, which includes three interchanges and service centre accesses in close proximity.
These roads will separate shorter trips from highway traffic and distribute it to the local road network while reducing the number of highway access points.
Technical investigations combined with feedback from community consultation carried out in October and November 2023 have informed the development of the preferred solution, which is now available to view via TMR’s website.
By identifying the preferred solution, it enables TMR to discuss future, sensitive property matters with adjacent landowners where impacts could not be avoided.
TMR is prioritising engagement with affected landowners and is calling on all local residents and motorists to have their say on the preferred solution by 14 September 2025.
The Australian and Queensland governments committed $34 million to develop the business cases for these upgrades (Australian Government $27.2 million, Queensland Government $6.8 million).
Additional funding is committed to progress detailed design and construction of the upgrades between Anzac Avenue and Uhlmann Road. Total funding requirements will be confirmed when a construction contract is awarded.
