Concrete industry drivers strike over job security

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) says Concrite company drivers took action in Sydney

Concrete agitator truck drivers all around Sydney working for the company Concrite took strike action yesterday over job security issues.

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) says drivers are seeking guarantees on job security due to Concrite continuing to use labour hire fleet trucks to undercut their own employee pay and conditions.

The TWU says drivers have stood together to maintain a fight for job security that is backed by proper wages and conditions that meet enterprise agreements.

TWU state secretary Richard Olsen says drivers previously met and voted no to the enterprise agreement, meaning the company version of it wasn’t endorsed.

“Concrite has produced an enterprise agreement of its own and have distributed it to workers,” Olsen says.

“The company is trying to go around the already established workers negotiation committee.”

Yesterday morning the impacted workers held a four-hour stop work meeting to consider options and endorse taking further action if necessary.

The TWU says Concrite managers have pushed out job security and dispute resolution from its version of the agreement while removing checks and balances to keep workers safe and provide reasonable conditions.

The union alleges that drivers in labour hire fleets aren’t receiving proper training or conditions, creating dangerous conditions when it comes to road safety.
