The first CEO for Victoria’s Port of Hastings Development Authority (PoHDA) has been appointed.

Victorian Ports Minister Denis Napthine yesterday welcomed the appointment of the former Australian Defence Force Commander Mike Lean to the position.

Napthine says the PoHDA Board conducted a thorough search for the right person to head the development of Victoria’s second container port.

“Mr Lean’s vast experience in the public and private sector and his understanding of logistics and infrastructure strategy is tailor made for this position, the experience he brings to the PoHDA team is exactly the experience we need to ensure this vital development continues to progress at pace,” Napthine says in a statement.

Lean has had a long career in the public and private sectors.

He served as Commander of the Australian Battalion VII in East Timor, had senior roles with Tenix Defence, and most recently was Head of Project Management and Business Governance (Maritime) with BAE Systems.

It has been more than a year since PoHDA and its board were formally established.

Key studies worth $2.3 million have started to progress the development.

The development of Hastings will include new port facilities and infrastructure to move containers to and from the port, with the port expected to become an operating container terminal in 10 to 15 years.
