A $36.8 million construction contract has been awarded to Northern Territory business Allan King & Sons Construction to upgrade an 18km section of the Central Arnhem Road.
The contract comes following the Northern Territory government’s desire to seal all 645km of the Central Arnhem Road corridor, which connects the regional centre of Nhulunbuy on the Territory’s north-east coast to the Stuart Highway.
Over 85 per cent of the Central Arnhem Road is currently unsealed, which exposes road users to frequent closures and restrictions throughout the wet season.
The Northern Territory and federal governments have jointly funded the $355 million Central Arnhem Road upgrade project, which will deliver sealing, reconstructing, widening and flood immunity improvements to the road.
Minister for Planning Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Joel Bowden says the sealing of the road will provide across the board improvements to all road users when complete.
“The Central Arnhem Road corridor project provides significant opportunities for economic development in the region as well as Aboriginal employment opportunities over a number of years,” Bowden says.
“This latest package of works for the Central Arnhem Road will improve connectivity, travel time, flood immunity and, importantly, road safety.
Three sections of the road totalling over 24km have already been completed as part of the project, with planning currently underway for a further five packages.
This batch of works is expected to commence in September 2024 and be completed by December 2026.
