Carpet trailers get redesign

Wettenhall's Group turns to custom B-doubles to move carpet between Melbourne and Sydney

October 13, 2010

While it might seem like any other freight job, moving carpet between Melbourne and Sydney is an intricate task that requires specialist equipment to do it right.

With that thought in mind, Wettenhall’s Group is now using six custom sets of B-double trailers that feature some unique internals to ensure the rolls of broadloom carpet reach their destination intact.

The carpet rolls measure 3.66 metres wide, filling more than two regulation pallet spaces, which meant that as well as the standard gates there are five additional sliding posts to hold the rolls in place.

Manufactured specifically for the job by Freighter, the trailer also has a modified roof. It is made of smooth plywood to ensure the top layer of carpet can be slid in and out without catching on the roof truss.

The six B-double combinations will be seen running up and down the Hume Highway between Laverton in Melbourne and Smeaton Grange in Sydney.
