While the Brisbane Truck Show has a proud history of showcasing career opportunities in the heavy vehicle industry – bringing bus loads of students to each event for facilitated career presentations and tours of the show, this year things are stepping up several gears.
Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia’s (HVIA) chief executive Todd Hacking says the opportunity was staring him in the face.
“As I have moved around visiting our members over the last year, I have been overwhelmed at the skills and labour shortages.
“Through better utilising our best asset, the Brisbane Truck Show, HVIA believes we can help our members and exhibitors to address one of their most frustrating challenges,” he says.
In 2019 the focus shifts to the tangible objective of facilitating jobs at the new and proved Brisbane Truck Show Jobs Hub.
The hub offers a highly engaging and interactive format supported by a dedicated web portal.
“It will feature a speed-interviewing-style Jobs Exchange where we hope to fill over one hundred jobs and potentially many more,” Hacking says.
Industry employers can post positions of all types on the portal and clarify whether experience and qualifications are required; or if they are suitable for people looking to enter the industry for the first time.
The portal means employers can pre-screen candidates ahead of time and ensure the right people are prioritised.

Equally, it allows job-seekers to filter through the available jobs to find positions that suit their interests, their location, and their skill and experience levels.
“Job-seekers can submit expressions of interest for jobs that leap out at them or they can submit their resume to be considered by all the registered employers,” Hacking says.
“We are really excited to be able to connect with the broader community around the strength of the heavy vehicle industry and the available, rewarding careers that we know are there for people with the right attitude.”
The Jobs Hub also features a range of exhibitors representing training organisations, and career specialists talking to attendees about career paths and how to get started on the journey.
The focus on Thursday and Friday will predominantly remain on students, with dynamic presentations and panel discussions from a variety of young ambassadors talking about their different career paths across both the trucking and heavy vehicle industries.
“We’ve identified people from various sectors of the industry to come and share their stories of how their diverse career paths have all provided great challenges, opportunities and more than anything, immense job satisfaction,” Hacking says.
Over the weekend the focus shifts to all job seekers, including skilled workers looking to transition from another career or industry.
The initiative is being supported by the Queensland Government and will draw considerable press in the lead-up to, and during, the event.
“The Brisbane Truck Show is renowned as Australia’s premier industry business-to-business and networking event, but it’s much more than that,” Hacking says.
“It offers education and business insights; it connects with the broader community; and it
showcases great opportunities to be a part of a thriving Australian industry.”
