Flood-proofing near Townsville to affect traffic on major transport artery
Flood proofing works are currently underway on the Bruce Highway in Queensland.
A seven-kilometre section between Vantassel and Cluden streets at Townsville will be upgraded as part of the Bruce Highway Action Plan.
Due for completion by mid-2015, the project is worth $137 million and is on track despite the recent flooding and rain from Cyclone Ita, Transport and Roads Minister Scott Emerson says.
“A serious weather event like Cyclone Ita reinforces the importance of delivering projects like this one as we work to bring the Bruce Highway up to a satisfactory standard,” Emerson says.
Flood proofing on the rail overpass near Abbott Street and new Stuart Creek bridge in Townsville is currently underway.
“From mid next month, motorists will see more activity on the highway as we start to move traffic to new and temporary traffic lanes, particularly around Abbott Street and Lakeside Drive,” Emerson says.
The 10-year blueprint that is worth $10 billion was released two years ago in a bid to strengthen the highway.
It is jointly funded by the Federal and Queensland governments.
