Bruce Highway upgrade to begin next week

Work to begin on upgrade of Bruce Highway to improve it for the 2700 trucks travelling the route daily

Work will begin next week on a multi-million dollar upgrade of the Bruce Highway to improve it for the more than 2000 trucks travelling the route daily.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese yesterday announced Civil Mining and Construction will begin work on stage three of the $10.4 million upgrade of the highway through Gympie, north of the Sunshine Coast.

Albanese says the works will cut congestion from Cross Street to Pine Street and improve road safety, while the highway will be expanded to four lanes.

“All up, we’re investing $70.8 million to upgrade the Bruce Highway through Gympie from Centro Way to Pine Street, a busy stretch of road that carries approximately 21,000 vehicles a day including 2,700 trucks,” he says.

As part of the upgrade, improvements will be made to Pine, Cross and Jane Street intersections and new signals installed at Cross and Jane streets.

This will include pedestrian crossing facilities and additional turning lanes to accomodate growing traffic demands.

A longer right turn lane will be installed for northbound traffic entering Pine Street, with Queensland Minister for Main Roads Craig Wallace saying the project has come at the right time.

“Gympie is growing rapidly and we need to build to meet that growth. It’s a busy area for both through and local traffic and we want people to be able to access the area safely,” Wallace says.

Weather permitting, the upgrade is due to be completed by the middle of next year.
