Far North Queensland is once again being lashed with heavy rain and flooding, barely a month after the region’s most recent weather crisis.
Since 9am on Tuesday, March 19, Townsville and its surrounds have had huge amounts of rain dumped on it, with some areas recording well over 200mm of rainfall in under 24 hours.
The resulting floods have caused the Bruce Highway to once again be cut between Cardwell and Ingham, while moderate flood warnings are in place for the Herbert, Bohle, Ross and Black rivers, as well as Bluewater Creek.
The heavy rain is expected to persist well into Wednesday, before conditions ease to showers later in the week.
Queensland has been battered by severe weather events to open 2025. February saw the northern reaches of the state fully cut off from the rest of the country as severe flooding cut the Bruce Highway and flooded key alternate routes.
Then, south-east Queensland and northern NSW were buffeted by conditions caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which caused over 250,000 power outages alongside infrastructure damage mere weeks ago.
