A recent compliance operation on Queensland’s Bruce Highway has revealed ongoing safety challenges in one of the state’s busiest freight corridors, with almost one in three heavy vehicles found non-compliant.
The findings come from Operation Overwatch, a joint enforcement effort by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator and the Queensland Police Service conducted ahead of the Christmas holiday period.
More than 140 heavy vehicles were intercepted along the Bruce Highway between Maryborough and Miriam Vale, an area identified as a high-risk crash zone. Around a third of those intercepts resulted in breaches of the Heavy Vehicle National Law.
NHVR Chief Operations Officer Paul Salvati says the operation targeted high-risk behaviours on a stretch of road where three fatal crashes had occurred in the weeks leading up to the blitz.
“Operation Overwatch aimed to reduce high-risk behaviours on one of Queensland’s most dangerous stretches of road,” Salvati says. “Concerningly, we saw 10 infringements related to fatigue, which we know is one of the most dangerous behaviours across industry.”
Officers assessed a broad range of compliance areas during roadside inspections, including vehicle mechanical condition, dimensions, fatigue management, permits, loading practices and mass limits.
Hotspots such as Iveragh, Gin Gin and Miriam Vale were a particular focus due to their crash history and high heavy vehicle volumes.
While the compliance results raised concerns, Salvati says industry response to the operation had been largely positive, particularly around increased enforcement visibility.
“Although some figures were disappointing, it was encouraging to hear directly from drivers who welcomed a stronger officer presence and more education around HVNL compliance,” he says.
Importantly, no crashes were recorded during the operation in areas where officers were active.
NHVR Northern Region Operations Manager Jarrod Wilson says education formed a key part of the operation, with 14 targeted interventions delivered alongside enforcement activity.
“Every roadside interaction aims to create a safer heavy vehicle industry,” Wilson says. “Through Operation Overwatch, we addressed issues such as fatigue, work diaries, dimensions and loading to help drivers better understand their obligations.”
The NHVR and Queensland Police Service say the operation reinforces the need for ongoing collaboration with industry to improve compliance and reduce road trauma on Queensland’s major freight routes.
