Bridge reopens to traffic after Inland Rail works

Wangaratta’s Green Street bridge has been fully re-opened to traffic and pedestrians following almost 12 months of works on the site

Traffic flow in and around Wangaratta has eased following the removal of traffic barriers on the Green Street bridge for the first time since January 2024.

The structure needed to be replaced, and the railway tracks below lowered in order to create the required clearances for the safe passage of double-stacked freight trains as part of the Inland Rail project.

The tracks were realigned and lowered by 2.8 metres, and the central pier of the old bridge was removed and replaced by a new bridge in the same location.

The bridge structure is made up of two 50-tonne main girders, fifteen 3-tonne cross girders and 50 concrete transfloor sections.

“The opening of the Green Street bridge is another step forward for the Inland Rail project,” Inland Rail Delivery Director Beveridge to Albury Ed Walker says.

“Thank you to the people of Wangaratta for their patience and understanding as we carried out the work.

“We’ve had great support from the local council, businesses and residents.

“We look forward to finishing the rest of the railway station precinct [in 2025].”
