Bridge assessments to boost HML access

Up to $1.1 million to be spent assessing 45 bridges in the ACT to improve HML access

Up to $1.1 million will be spent assessing 45 bridges in the ACT to improve higher mass limits (HML) access for the heavy vehicle industry.

The Rudd and Stanhope governments will each invest $550,000 in the initiative to support heavier vehicles on priority freight routes.

Once the assessments are complete, work will begin on the bridges to make them suitable for HML access.

ACT Chief Minister John Stanhope says the bridge assessment will improve road safety for truck drivers delivering goods throughout the region.

“This responsible investment from the ACT and federal Labor governments will support jobs and deliver better and safer driving conditions along these priority freight routes in the ACT,” he says.

“The repairs will benefit drivers and in particular truck drivers that use these routes and over time will reduce the number of trucks on ACT roads.”

The routes set to benefit from the assessment are Northbourne Avenue, Pialligo Avenue, the Majura Road and the Monaro Highway.

In Victoria meanwhile, a further nine federally-funded level crossing upgrades have been completed.

Flashing lights and other safety measures have now been installed at 29 level crossings throughout the state in the previous 5 months.

The most recent to be completed include crossings at Castle Donnington, Marong, Terang and Rosedale.
