Berge Bulk implements Wayfinder technology

Singapore-based international dry bulk shipping company Berge Bulk has added Sofar's Wayfinder navigation to its fleet

One of the world’s leading independent dry bulk owners Berge Bulk has adopted Sofar Ocean’s Wayfinder technology across its fleet.

Singaporean-based Berge Bulk owns and manages 90 vessels capable of holding over 15 million DWT in the water.

Wayfinder’s dynamic voyage optimisation will enable Berge Bulk’s ships to save time, fuel and emissions by leveraging the most accurate marine weather forecasts possible, which are created using Sofar’s global network of ocean sensors.

The technology has been equipped across Berge Bulk’s entire fleet, including its new vessels equipped with wind propulsion technology.

“Using innovative technology to boost vessel efficiency is key to our Maritime Marshall Plan for decarbonisation,” Berge Bulk founder CEO James Marshall says.

“Sofar’s Wayfinder helps us understand fleet performance and importantly improves the vessels’ route optimisation as we aim for a zero-emission fleet.”

“By reducing the uncertainty in weather predictions, Wayfinder delivers significant efficiency gains immediately, saving an average of four to six per cent on fuel and emissions,” co-founder and CEO of Sofar Ocean Tim Janssen says.

“We are excited about the role of Wayfinder in supporting new technologies to drive the energy transition and look forward to partnering with Berge Bulk on its journey to decarbonisation.”

Wayfinder uses Sofar’s weather forecasts powered by its proprietary global ocean sensor network to reduce forecast uncertainty and keep vessels on the most efficient path to their destination port.

“Better weather data and forecasts are a cornerstone to unlock superior vessel performance models and voyage optimisation,” Janssen continues.

“Our partnership with Berge Bulk is built on this philosophy and we are committed to help prepare its fleet for a present and future defined by decarbonisation.

“We know there is no silver bullet for getting to net zero, but we are confident voyage optimisation is a stepping stone technology to support the efficient rollout of new, green technologies.”
