Authorities give time frame on Charleville routes

Six weeks work needed to demolish remaining structure and build side track

Queensland road authorities continue to work at firming up transport links around Charleville following the explosion there earlier this month.

The ammonium nitrate blast destroyed Mitchell Highway surface and infrastructure, making it impassable.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) says it has now taken possession of the Angellala Creek Bridge site.

“Works currently underway at the site include demolishing the destroyed structure and building a side track to allow vehicle access, including Type 2 road trains, through the area,” according to a TMR spokesperson .

“The work is expected to take about six weeks, weather permitting.

“Our top priority at this stage is finishing the new access route as quickly as possible, with a site survey and design also underway for a bridge replacement.

The department advises that, for Type 1 Road Trains with two trailers, the following suggested route has been identified:

Turn right from Bourke to Walgett then to Dirranbandi via the Castlereagh Highway, road trains can turn right from Bourke to Walgett then to Dirranbandi via the Castlereagh Highway, then to St George, left onto the Balonne Highway, then right to Mitchell via the Mitchell – St George Road then to Augathella (or Charleville).

For Type 2 Road Trains with three trailers, the following suggested route has been identified:

Type 2 and Type 1 road trains can travel from Bourke through to Cunnamulla, turn left towards Thargomindah, then right to Quilpie via the Thargomindah – Quilpie Road, then right to Charleville.
