Australia’s entry in the Scania Top Team technical challenge is officially the best in the world.

The team of service technicians, parts interpreters and customer service representatives from Scania Prestons in NSW took out the title after winning the Australian leg of the competition. It beat teams from Belgium and Holland in the final.

As well as the internal corporate prestige, the competition offers a cash prize of $A67,500 to the winning team.

Team leader Chris Nobbs described the win as “a dream come true”, saying everyone on the team had put in an “amazing” effort.

The Top Team competition began in 1989, with this year’s event the eighth time running. It attracted a total entry of more than 6000 participants representing 46 countries.

After winning the Australian round, the team from Scania Prestons competed in the Asian regional final, earning its place in the world final.

The full team was Nobbs, David McCourt, Graham Andrews, Frank Muscat and Steve Robinson. It received coaching from colleagues Steve Shaw, Craig Pygall and Brett Tingwell, while Greg Sargeant mentored the group.

As well as providing a global stage for the technical teams, the competition is used by Scania to improve working conditions in workshops, as well develop best practices for servicing and repairing Scania vehicles.

Speaking at the final event, Scania President and CEO Leif Ostling said the competition demonstrated the dedication of service teams everywhere, which is the key to a successful service business.

“The teams that competed in this year’s Scania Top Team final are all good examples of this dedication,” Ostling says.

“There are, however, many skilled service technician teams at Scania workshops all over the world. They pushed the finalists to excel and thus truly earn the title of Top Team.”
