The first Australian-made electric trucks from a major original equipment manufacturer have rolled off Volvo Group Australia’s production line in Wacol, Queensland.
The milestone marks a significant step for local heavy vehicle manufacturing, with Volvo now building battery-electric trucks at the same Brisbane facility where it has manufactured trucks for Australian conditions for more than 50 years.
The Federal Government has also backed the shift through a $70 million Clean Energy Finance Corporation investment with Volvo Group Australia, designed to support more Australian-made electric trucks entering the national fleet.
Why is this a manufacturing milestone?
Volvo Group Australia says the Wacol production milestone proves that Australia has the capability to manufacture heavy vehicles with zero tailpipe emissions to a global standard.
To prepare for production, Volvo brought international experts to Australia to train and upskill local workers.
Volvo Group Australia President and CEO Martin Merrick said the first locally built electric trucks showed what the Wacol team and facility could deliver.
“This is a proud day for Volvo Trucks and for Australian manufacturing,” Merrick said.
“For more than 50 years, we have built Volvo trucks for Australian conditions here in Wacol, and today we have built the first electric truck ever manufactured by an OEM in this country.”
The company manufactures heavy-duty Volvo and Mack trucks at Wacol, with the electric truck program adding a new chapter to the site’s manufacturing role.
How will the CEFC investment support operators?
The Federal Government’s $70 million CEFC-backed investment is intended to help more freight operators move into electric trucks.
The funding will provide discounted finance for trucking businesses and support the long-term residual value of electric trucks, both of which are important barriers for fleets considering the shift from diesel.
Electric trucks can be cheaper to run and maintain over time, but the upfront investment and uncertainty around resale value can make the transition difficult for some operators.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said the investment aimed to support local manufacturing and cleaner fleet options.
“This investment backs Australian-made electric trucks, skilled manufacturing jobs in Queensland, and cheaper-to-run vehicles for freight operators,” Bowen said.
As demand grows, the Federal Government says more than 1,000 jobs could be supported at the Wacol facility.
What does this mean for freight operators?
For road freight businesses, the Wacol milestone is not only about vehicle manufacturing. It is also about whether electric trucks can become a more practical fleet option in Australia.
Transport accounts for around 22 per cent of Australia’s total emissions and is projected to become the largest source of emissions by 2030 without further action.
Heavy freight remains one of the more difficult parts of the transition because operators need vehicles that can carry payloads, meet route requirements and fit real depot operations.
Volvo Trucks says progress will require more than local production. It points to the need for supportive policy settings, harmonised road-weight rules, procurement commitments, and investment in charging and grid infrastructure.
Why does local production matter?
Australian-made electric trucks could give local operators vehicles built with domestic conditions, customers and supply chains in mind.
Volvo Group Executive Vice President and Volvo Trucks President Roger Alm said building electric trucks locally reflected confidence in both the Australian market and workforce.
“Australia is an important market for Volvo Trucks, and building electric trucks here is a clear sign of our long-term commitment,” Alm said.
“It reflects Volvo Group’s confidence in Australian manufacturing and in the people behind it.”
Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive Ben Lazzaro said the achievement strengthened local manufacturing capability.
“The first Australian-made electric trucks demonstrate how local manufacturing can drive innovation, support sustainability goals, and strengthen our economic future,” Lazzaro said.
