The closure of Goodyear’s Somerton (Victoria) manufacturing plant will not affect the supply of heavy vehicle tyres, the company has reassured its customers.
Last week, it was announced the Somerton plant, which manufactures passenger car tyres, will close on December 31, in the face of rising manufacturing costs.
Judith Swales, the managing director CEO of says since Goodyear’s full acquisition of South Pacific Tyres in January, 2006, it has been progressively aligning itself with Goodyear’s global operations.
“Goodyear’s global supply chain strategy will help us continue to meet the needs of our existing and future customers from tyre plants throughout the world including Europe, North America and Asia,” Swales says.
“Naturally, South Pacific Tyres is focused and most concerned about the wellbeing of associates and their families who are affected most by this announcement at this time.”
Despite recent leaps in the price of oil, Swales says South Pacific Tyres ‘continuously reviews’ its retail pricing to ensure it keeps the business cost competitive.
