Australia Post has released key metrics for its peak November and December parcel delivery period and has revealed it delivered almost 103 million parcels in the 1 November to 31 December 2024 timeframe.
The 3.1 per cent increase on last year’s comparable period means the delivery service has set a record for deliveries in a two-month span, with 2800 parcels delivered across Australia per minute across the timeframe.
The record comes after truck and van drivers were top of the organisation’s list of desired Christmas hire roles, as it braced for the unprecedented demand period.
7.6 million Australian households made at least one online purchase in November and December, a 2.4 per cent increase from last year, with the Northern Territory (12.4 per cent), Tasmania (11.4 per cent) and South Australia (8.9 per cent) registering the strongest year-on-year growth.
December 9 was the busiest day for parcel delivery in the period with over three million parcels delivered, however over two million deliveries per day was registered for more than 30 days.
“The record volume of deliveries reflects Australia Post’s ongoing investment into new and upgraded parcel facilities, technology and fleet, as well as commitment to improving services for online shoppers,” Australia Post Executive General Manager Parcel, Post and eCommerce services Gary Starr says.
“Consumers are more empowered than ever to manage their delivery experience. We’ve listened and understood their need for more reliability, simplicity and speed when ordering online, which has ultimately shaped the success of our best peak yet.”
Starr adds more Australians are utilising the cyber sales to get the best deals, meaning the Christmas peak period continues to extend.
“Retailers have a tremendous opportunity to learn from and capitalise on the growing appetite for online shopping, especially during key sales events,” Starr continues.
“The record-breaking cyber weekend (29 November – 2 December 2024) which saw 7.8 per cent growth in online purchases compared to the same time last year, shows Aussies are waiting for these sales to do all their shopping at once, cementing strategic shopping as the new norm.”
