Aussie truck sales warm in August, down on 2023

Australia’s truck sales market warmed in August, but sale numbers are still considerably down when compared to 2023

The Truck Industry Council’s August T-Mark data has shown Australia’s truck sales market slowly heating up, with last month registering a 4.47 per cent increase in sales from July.

Despite the month-on-month sales jump experienced in August though, 2024’s total of 26,144 trucks sold nationwide as of August is well behind 2023’s mark of 27,597 in the same period.

Kenworth has strengthened its position as Australia’s go-to commercial vehicle. It increased its July sales by 44 vehicles to register a total of 327 sales – 139 more than second-placed Volvo.

The 1308 heavy vehicle sales in August this year also fell short of 2023’s mark, with the same month last year registering 1419 total heavy duty vehicle sales.

Where Kenworth is dominating the heavy duty truck sector, Isuzu is dominating the medium duty segment and has accounted for 51.7 per cent of all medium truck sales.

Month-on-month growth saw medium truck sales increase from 622 sales in July to 657 in August.

Although the sales of light duty trucks in 2024 are well behind the frenetic pace set by 2023, Mercedes-Benz and Iveco are boasting increased market share in the space despite the declining market.

They have increased their market share to 5.2 per cent and 9.3 per cent respectively, with Isuzu, Fuso and Hino suffering the most due to the decline.
