Sam Sali left an indelible legacy on Australia’s transport industry. Now, NatRoad is calling for nominations for the newest award named in Sali’s honour.
Sali, born in 1937, passed away in January this year following an illustrious career in the transport sector. He completed his motor mechanic apprenticeship aged 19, co-founded S.Sali & Sons with his brother, and spent decades driving trucks on Australia’s roads.
Then, in 1994 he was heavily involved in the formation of NatRoad through the amalgamation of the NTF and the Long Distance Road Transport Association. He served as a NatRoad director until 2001.
Fittingly, the new award bearing Sali’s name will be given to Australia’s best young driver, with eligible recipients to be aged 30 years and under in any part of the road transport industry.
NatRoad CEO says Sali’s importance to both NatRoad and the wider Australian transport industry means honouring him through the next generation was a simple decision.
“Sam made a real and meaningful impact on road transport. Honouring him in connection with the next generation of operators just makes sense,” Clark says.

The Sam Sali National Young Driver Award will be presented at the upcoming NatRoad Connect 24 Gala Dinner.
