National carrier Australia Post has announced plans to build a new multi-million-dollar parcel facility in Hobart.
Opening in late 2027, the 12,000sqm facility will become the largest sorting facility in the state, featuring advanced automation capable of sorting up to 6,000 parcels per hour.
The facility is set to strengthen operators across southern Tasmania to support growing parcel demand in the region through an increase in network capacity and efficiency.
Australia Post general manager of network operations south Darren Mackenzie says the new parcel facility will play an important role in strengthening parcel services for Hobart customers and surrounding communities.
“Tasmania continues to see strong online shopping growth, with $1.6 billion spent online in the past year – an 11 per cent increase year‑on‑year. Suburbs like Howrah are recording some of the highest parcel volumes in the state, and this new facility will help us meet that growing demand while giving local retailers the confidence to grow,” Mackenzie says.
“Its convenient location right next to Hobart Airport gives us direct airside access to our dedicated A321 freighter, making Australia Post the only express service provider operating out of Hobart Airport and enabling faster deliveries for customers.
“Safety has been central to the facility’s design, with increased automation significantly reducing manual handling and parcel touchpoints. This not only improves efficiency but creates a safer working environment for our team members.”

Jess Crowley says the facility will give the business confidence to continue scaling locally.

Having the capacity to manage higher volumes means we can plan ahead and continue delivering a reliable service for our customers,” Crowley says.
The site will target 5-star Green Star accreditation and is planned to feature a 200kW rooftop solar system, battery storage and electric vehicle charging.
The Hobart parcel facility announcement builds on Australia Post’s broader national investment in modern parcel infrastructure, including the recently announced Adelaide Parcel Super Hub and Sunshine Coast parcel facility, as well as ongoing investment across regional Australia.
