Aurizon Australia warns of job cuts amid potential earnings hit

The major Australian rail freight operator has flagged it may have to cut hundreds of jobs as its half-year results take a hit

The nation’s largest rail freight operator has warned it may have to cut up to 200 full-time job roles across its business as its earnings take a hit.

According to Reuters, Aurizon Australia last night said it may have to cut the roles following an assessment of its non-operational cost base.

Back in February, Aurizon mentioned it planned to introduce “additional efficiency improvements” in its half-year results.

The potential for job cuts comes after Aurizon’s half-year results fell below market estimates as its net profit after tax of $205 million came in below a Visible Alpha consensus of $215.2 million.

With Aurizon also mentioning in the report that it is owed roughly $50 million from two bulk customers and $15 million in delay charges and handling services from another bulk customer, these boosts would still see the operator fall below its forecasts.

Depending on how much money it receives back, Aurizon will then determine its next action as its staff base of more than 6,000 employees face a nervous wait.
