Auckland Transport leadership is entering a period of transition, with Stacey van der Putten appointed interim chief executive as the organisation prepares for structural reform.
Van der Putten will step into the role from May 1, 2026, for an 18-month term spanning both the transition period and the establishment phase of a new transport-controlled organisation.
The appointment comes at a critical time for Auckland’s transport system, as governance changes reshape how infrastructure and services are delivered.

The leadership shift is tied to broader legislative reforms that will redefine Auckland Transport’s role within the city’s governance structure.
The organisation is expected to move towards a more focused delivery model, particularly for public transport services.
AT Board Chair Andrew Ritchie said continuity and experience were key factors in the appointment.
“Stacey is a highly respected transport leader who has served in a number of roles at Auckland Transport since 2017,” Ritchie said.
Who is Stacey van der Putten?
Van der Putten currently serves as Director of Public Transport and Active Modes, overseeing the development and delivery of Auckland’s public transport and active travel networks.
Her experience spans multiple leadership roles within Auckland Transport, including safety and metro services, as well as 16 years in the private sector.
She also holds governance roles across the Australasian transport sector, including with the Australasian Railway Association and the Public Transport Association of Australia and New Zealand.

The interim appointment is designed to provide stability during a period of organisational change, while maintaining progress on key transport initiatives.
Mayor Wayne Brown said the transition will require strong leadership to ensure delivery outcomes are maintained.
“This will be crucial as AT goes through change. I look forward to continuing to work closely with her,” Brown said.

Van der Putten will take over from outgoing chief executive Dean Kimpton, who concludes his tenure at the end of April.
