Rail and port provider Asciano has secured a long term coal haulage contract with BHP Mitsui Coal in Queensland.
Commencing January 2013, the deal will see Asciano move up to 4.2 million tonnes of coal per annum
using
the northern missing link which
will connect the Newlands and Goonyella coal systems when the project is complete in early 2012.
Asciano Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer John Mullen says the
agreement is a coup for the company.
“Winning a contract with such a major coal producer will further our growth aspirations into the newly expanded key Port of Abbot Point,” Mullen says.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome BHP Mitsui Coal as a valued customer of our Pacific National coal haulage business in Queensland.”
Mullen says Asciano’s key objective is to maximise the opportunity for tonnage through Abbot Point with the two diesel powered trains to support the BHP Billiton task being maintained at the company’s recently launched heavy maintenance facility at Nebo.
“Asciano is offering an innovative and flexible rail haulage approach resulting in an operational solution that drives the efficient behaviour of both rail and coal operators,” Mullen says.
“Our focus on customer service outcomes combined with our unique commercial structure is driving positive performance outcomes for all our customers and this is being recognised by both existing and potential customers in Queensland.
“The successful ramp up of our operations is a testament to our Queensland workforce and management team, and reinforces our ability to deliver on our Queensland coal strategy.”
