ARTIO NSW backs WorkCover rebates move

Special promotion rebates are available to help small transport operators achieve safety improvements

December 3, 2013

The Australian Road Transport Industrial Organisation (ARTIO) NSW Branch has welcomed WorkCover NSW’s announcement that special promotion rebates are available to help small transport operators achieve safety improvements.

The rebates apply to high priority areas for safety improvements which have been identified by WorkCover following analysis of NSW workers compensation claims and consultation with industry, ARTIO NSW Secretary/Treasurer Hugh McMaster says.

“Areas identified where the rebate will apply broadly fall into the following categories: manual tasks when handling freight; preventing falls from heights; securing loads; and traffic management,” McMaster adds.

“Examples of the items eligible for a grant include automated self-opening and closing curtain systems, a solid work platform with a travel restraint, a suspension system or gate hangers for tautliners and lighting in loading areas.

“There are many other items eligible for a rebate which can be expected to contribute in a practical way to a safer workplace.

Eligible transport operators can claim up to $2,000 towards the cost of purchasing and installing eligible safety equipment, however conditions apply.

“Applicants must be a sole trader or employ 50 or fewer employees, have a current and active Australian Business Number which states that the main business location is in NSW, have a current active NSW workers compensation insurance policy and have a hire and reward operation as their main business,” McMaster says.

In order to claim the rebate, eligible transport operators must have an advisory visit from a WorkCover officer.

“ARTIO NSW encourages eligible transport operators to lodge their application by early 2014 to ensure they qualify for the rebate ,” McMaster says
