Federal transport minister issues determination confirming the fuel excise will rise to 26.14 cents per litre on July 1
June 17, 2013
The Federal Government has confirmed the fuel excise will rise to 26.14 cents per litre at the start of the new financial year.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese has issued a determination stating the proposed 2.5 percent (0.64 cents per litre) increase will take effect on July 1.
The increase, designed to recoup the cost of government investment in the road network, means the trucking industry’s fuel tax credit will fall to 12 cents per litre.
The Road User Charge Determination (No. 1) 2013 was issued following consultation with industry earlier this year, as required under the Fuel Tax Act.
The National Transport Commission (NTC) released the proposed increase for feedback in February.
“During the subsequent four week consultation period, the NTC held consultations with a number of key industry stakeholders and received submissions on the consultation document,” the determination states.
“The NTC recommended that the Transport Minister apply the annual adjustment factor to the Road User Charge to ensure ongoing cost recovery of the heavy vehicles’ share of government road construction and maintenance expenditure.”
The increase to the excise coincides with higher registration fees. The cost of registering a semi-trailer will go from $6,394 to $6,555, while a nine-axle B-double will cost an extra $362 to register.
The price for registering a double road train will go from $13,857 to $14,205, with a triple road train costing $17,025 (an extra $418) from the beginning of the new financial year.
