Adelaide Produce Market safety blitz nets 23

Transport Department warns of greater vigilance on weight, length and height as harvest starts

November 15, 2012

South Australian road authorities focused on Adelaide Produce Market yesterday in their latest heavy vehicle compliance initiative, Operation Fruit Fall.

The action saw 23 truck drivers either cautioned or fined after transport safety compliance officers inspected 45 heavy vehicles at the market’s exits on Burma Road and Merchant Crescent.

Load restraint was a primary concern, with a total of four direction notices, seven expiation notices, two vehicles being defected and 10 cautions, according to the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure.

“It is concerning that a minority of operators continue to run the gauntlet on heavy vehicle compliance,” Transport Safety Regulation Director Trent Rusby says.

“However operations like this morning’s prove that we won’t tolerate that kind of behaviour and we will continue to focus on such areas as load restraint and other road safety issues.

“Our message is simple – if you fail to comply, we’ll be there to enforce the law.

“This is all about ensuring road safety for everyone.”

Rusby sought to remind heavy vehicle drivers and those associated with the transport industry of their responsibilities under compliance and enforcement legislation.

He added that, with the harvest season also about to start, the Department will be monitoring and checking freight trucks and heavy vehicles across the state.

“Fines will be enforced for those operators who substantially breach weight, length and height requirements,” Rusby says.
