Western Australia’s Kwinana Freeway is set to be the beneficiary of a newly announced $700 million upgrade package, with the funding set to be split 50:50 between the state and federal governments.
In addition to supporting the future Westport project, the widening of the freeway will add around 50 per cent capacity to the upgraded sections to improve freight efficiency on a road that carries 100,000 vehicles per day.
The road infrastructure improvements will also support the growing industrial areas and Defence Assets on the Western Trade Coast.
The new funding builds on the previous $67 million joint commitment towards the planning and scoping of landside enabling infrastructure for the Westport project.
“Western Australia is an economic powerhouse,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says. “We want to make sure we are investing in future job creating projects like Westport, while still delivering immediate congestion benefits for commuters now.
“This project will support jobs, improve safety and ease congestion for the 100,000 commuters who use the Kwinana Freeway each day.”
Other major projects currently ongoing in Western Australia include METRONET, upgrades to the Tonkin Highway and Outback Way.
“Western Australia is the economic engine room of Australia,” Western Australia Premier Roger Cook says. “With Westport and the Western Trade Coast critical to keeping our economy strong and creating the local jobs of the future in WA.”
