Western Star recall over brake light fault

Brake lights may not illuminate in over 600 vehicles sold since 2007

Over 600 Western Star trucks sold in Australia over the past 11 years have been recalled over a fault in the brake lights that could cause them not to illuminate when the brakes are applied.

The recall affects Western Star Trucks models 4700, 4800, 4900, 5800 and 6900 sold between March 27, 2007, and November 21, 2017, with a list of the vehicle identification numbers of each of the affected 633 vehicles available here.

The news comes after more vehicles were added to a recall of Freightliner Argosy, Columbia and Coronado trucks first made in April this year. Click here to read more

The Product Safety Australia website says that the fault means that on certain vehicles, after several hard brake applications, the brake light pressure switch may not activate the lights with a light application of the brake pedal.

“Brake lights not illuminating when the service brakes are applied would not signal to other motorists the intent of the driver to slow down, leading to an increased risk of a crash,” the website says.

Owners of affected vehicles are urged to contact their local dealer to arrange to have the vehicle modified – a list of dealers in your area is available here.
