Vehicles from FH13, FH16, FM13 and FM11 series affected
Up to 3,960 Volvo trucks, manufactured between 2012 and 2017, have been recalled over an airbag deflator issue.
The callback affects trucks in the FH13, FH16, FM13 and FM11 series.
The driver’s airbag inflator may rupture in case the affected vehicle is involved in an accident and the airbag goes off.
“Safety has always been a core value of Volvo Trucks, and as such, we take safety matters extremely seriously,” a Volvo Group Australia notice states.
“These vehicles in question contain Takata airbags that use an Ammonium Nitrate inflator, and whilst there have been no issues or incidents with these particular inflators on our trucks, the decision has been made to recall these trucks strictly as a precautionary measure.
“This precautionary recall is a result of Volvo Trucks’ thorough internal quality and safety processes.
“As soon as new information came to hand that suggested the particular Ammonium Nitrate inflator used in the Takata Airbags fitted to these Volvo Trucks may degrade and become unstable with age, the decision was made to recall these trucks as a precautionary measure.
“Whilst there have been no instances, locally or globally, Volvo Trucks has opted to replace the Ammonium Nitrate inflators in question with Guanidine Nitrate inflators, a type of inflator considered to be safe in our industry.
“Volvo Trucks Australia has already started contacting all impacted customers in writing, in accordance with its commitment to safety and legal obligations.
“Work to rectify the impacted vehicles has already commenced, and customer are encouraged to contact their local dealer or authorised workshop to arrange a time for their vehicle to be inspected and rectified, free of charge, at their earliest convenience.”
