Mahindra launches next generation PikUp

Local subsidiary to offer first update since original landed 10 years ago

Mahindra AutomotiveAustralia Pty Ltd (MAAPL) will offer the all new PikUp ute to the local market.

The wholly owned Australian subsidiary will offer a vehicle with new body styling, new six-speed transmission, increased turbo diesel power and a new interior.

“We have been here in business for over a decade with a local Mahindra subsidiary and on-ground team to focus on needs and aspirations of the consumers and to build our offerings,” Mahindra & Mahindra head of international operations Joydeep Moitra says

“For the new Mahindra PikUp, a six-month test schedule was carried out in Australia and concluded in August 2017, clocking up over 80,000 local kilometres.

“This input has helped create a Mahindra PikUp perfect for local conditions. This is a testimony of our commitment to developing products for the Australian market.”

The vehicle comes in two specification levels – the work-focused S6 and the S10, which offers an SUV-like specification  – with single and dual-cab offerings, the latter dubbed “Double Cab”.

The flagship S10 Double Cab has remote central locking, cruise control, satellite navigation, reversing camera and a multifunction steering wheel, plus auto wipers and intelligent headlamps.

Fully automatic climate control appears in the S10 variants.

Safety features include hill descent control (HDC), electronic stability control (ESC), anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), roll-over mitigation, airbags, crash protection crumple zones and a collapsible steering column are standard across the range.

Under the bonnet, the new PikUp has an updated 2.2- litre four-cylinder mHawk turbodiesel engine which makes use of a variable geometry turbocharger to produce 103kw.

The torque peak of 330Nm is reached at just 1,600rpm and sustained to 2,800 rpm.

The turbodiesel engine is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels, with 4×4 transmission with low range.

The range is fitted with an Eaton MLD (mechanical locking differential) as standard.
