Registrations show light commercial vehicles on the march

ABS Motor Vehicle Census also reveals strong light rigids’ performance

It is no secret to vehicle manufacturers and industry observers, but Australia is becoming the land of light commercial vehicle (LCV).

As the domination of Holden and Ford become a historical relic and car ownership’s growth eases, registrations of light commercials are on the march, Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures for the past five years show.

“All states and territories have experienced a decrease in the proportion of passenger vehicles in their fleet over the five year period 2010 to 2015,” the 2015 Motor Vehicle Census (MVC) researchers say.

“The decrease in the proportion of passenger vehicles has been offset by increases in the proportion of light commercial vehicles and motor cycles in each jurisdiction.”

Somewhat overshadowed, though, is the hefty growth of light rigid trucks, up 21.4 per cent in five years to 140,625, compared with LCVs’ 18.1 per cent to 2,907,006, and articulated trucks’ 15.2 per cent to 94,975.

Heavy rigid trucks were the laggard, rising only 5.2 per cent in half a decade to 331,619.

Light commercials accounted for 16.1 per cent of all vehicles registered in Australia for the 2015 MVC.

Rigid trucks accounted for 2.6 per cent of the total number of vehicles registered in 2015.

Light rigid trucks have increased by 21.4 per cent since 2010, while heavy rigid trucks have increased by 5.2 per cent over the same period.
