Daimler announces updated OM 471 engine range

New Mercedes-Benz OM 471 heavy-duty engines aim to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions

Daimler has announced a fuel-efficient update to the Mercedes-Benz OM 471 heavy-duty engine range with five output ratings, increased low-rev torque and a new X-Pulse injection system.

First launched in 2011, the 12.8-litre in-line six-cylinder OM 471 engine seen in heavy-duty Actros, Antos and Arocs trucks has been revamped in 310kW, 330kW, 350kW, 375kW and 390kW output variants with torque ranging from 2100Nm to 2600Nm at 1100rpm.

The company predicts a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions across the range, calculating an Actros would save approximately 1,100 litres per year and emit three less tonnes of CO2 if it consumed 28.5 litres/100km across an annual mileage of 130,000km.

The drop in fuel consumption has been aided by an extended final-drive ratio from i=2.611 to i=2.533 reducing the rev speed by three per cent and an overhauled X-Pulse injection system featuring an improved pressure capacity and eight-hole nozzle to increase flow rate by 10 per cent.

Modifications to the piston bowl geometry, compression ratio and a reduction in the exhaust gas recirculation rate has also helped.

However, the reduction comes at the cost of increased AdBlue consumption to control emissions.

Daimler says the basic OM 471 engine variants that offer 310, 330 and 350kW’s of power are complemented by new ‘top torque’ versions that receive a torque boost when required.

“When these engines are fitted in trucks, an extra 200Nm of torque is placed on tap as required whenever the highest gear of the Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmission is engaged,” Daimler says.

“This strategy has the effect of reducing the frequency of gear changes and increasing transportation speed without any negative impact on fuel consumption.”

Torque build-up at low rev speeds has also quickened in the new range, while peak output lies between 1450 and 1800rpm and maximum torque remains constant between 900 and 1450rpm.

A new patented solution for exhaust gas recirculation, new customised asymmetric turbocharger and new asymmetric injection round out the engine’s improvements.
