Mercedes-Benz Argosy and Volvo FH models recalled

Potential leaks could affect brakes for Volvo and Freightliner truck models

Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific has recalled 291 Freightliner Argosy trucks and Volvo Group Australia has recalled an unknown number of FH models, both citing potential braking issues.

Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall notice for the Argosy vehicles with Cummins ISX engines, highlighting a possible issue with leaking exhaust gases damaging components.

“The end cap of the After treatment device (ATD) may fail allowing hot exhaust gases to escape resulting in possible damage to components including the pneumatic brake lines,” the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) notice says.

“This may result in automatic application of the trailer brakes causing an accident hazard to the vehicle occupants and other road users.”

The affected vehicles were sold nationally between September 1, 2011 and January 31, 2015 at authorised Freightliner dealers.

The ACCC says owners of the 291 vehicles will be contacted by letter.

In a separate recall, Volvo Group Australia has acknowledged problems with the brake hoses on FH vehicles sold nationally, stating the hoses are too short on the front axle and can be stretched too far while driving.

“Air leakage can occur in the parking brake air circuit causing the parking brakes to be unintentionally applied on the front wheels, posing an accident hazard to the driver and other road users,” the ACCC recall notice says.

Owners of FH models are advised to head to their closest repair dealer.
