Hutchison return to work hits road block

Federal Court win sees MUA members gain short-term relief

Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) members working for Hutchison Ports Australia are seeking to return to work following a Federal Court injunction.

But reports from Sydney and Brisbane say the company appears not to have been prepared for turn of events and have sent the morning shift home until this afternoon.

The union members had set up pickets around Hutchison operations after the email sacking of 97 of the companies complement of 224 workers due to lack of business.

Justice Darryl Rangiah granted the injunction until the dispute is heard fully on August 31.

The MUA claims Hutchison breached its enterprise agreement with its workers on two grounds, lack of adequate consultation with respect to redundancies and ignoring the dispute resolution clause.
