MUA sees red over Hutchison downsize

Struggling third stevedoring operation facing industrial unrest over its perceived strategy

The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) is preparing for a war with Hutchison Ports as it plans a move towards automation.

In a leaflet distributed in Hutchison workplaces, the union says the company is planning to offer redundancies but has not yet approached it as required in the prevailing workplace agreement.

It warns the company has deliberately downsized its business, by not seeking new contracts, and is looking to reduce its workforce before reinvesting in automated technology. The union also suggests Hutchison Ports may be considering hiring new, non-unionised staff as business ramps back up.

“The plot … is nothing but an ages-old divide and conquer union busting tactic,” the union says.

The MUA says it is not against automation or the loss of some jobs as a result, but is demanding a seat at the table as the changes are developed.

“The MUA will fight for a fair redundancy plan and avert as many job losses as possible,” the leaflet says. “Anyone forced to leave must be first back if new jobs arise.”

The union is planning a four-hour stop work meeting to discuss the issue with members.

ATN’s call to Hutchison Ports’ media representative was not returned today.
